Maldives WeatherLearning about the Maldives weather patterns will make it easier for you to choose the dates of your Maldives vacation to coincide with the best season.
- The Climate
Because the Maldives is located close to the equator, the country experiences a monsoonal or tropical climate.
Although The Maldives has two distinct seasons, a dry season and a wet season, the temperature hardly varies throughout the year. Daily temperatures range from 31 degrees Celsius to 23 degrees Celsius at night. The hot sunny days are tempered by cool sea breezes and balmy evening temperatures.
- Best Vacation Periods
The dry season extends from January to March and the wet season from mid-May to November. During its wet season the Maldives experiences torrential rain, so plan your Maldives vacation outside this time frame. Peak season is between December and April each year.
- Monsoon Season
The heaviest rainfall occurs during the southwest monsoon season from mid-May to November.
- Tsunamis
In the tsunami of December 26, 2004, two-thirds of Male, the capital, was flooded. Some low lying islands and atolls were completely submerged, including several major resorts. Thirteen islands were abandoned because all buildings were destroyed and the fresh water supply was contaminated.
- Dressing for the Weather
Be sure to bring lightweight comfortable clothing and beach wear for day time and perhaps a light jacket for night wear. You'll also need light covering garments for any excursions among the local Muslim population.
