Some suggestions on where to shop in the Maldives:

  • Malé

The best location for shopping in the Maldives is Malé, the capital. Here you'll find a variety of shops which serve both local residents and the thousands of tourists visiting from the surrounding resort islands.

Trading hours in Malé are as follows:

    • Most shops in the main street open at 9AM or 10AM and close at 11PM.

    • Convenience stores open at 6AM or 7AM and close at 11PM.

    • All shops close for 15 minutes at prayer times.

You'll find stores offering products of all kinds, including

    • Clothing and shoes
Shop for great casual clothing as well as designer clothes and sports gear.

    • Sporting Goods

    • Books
Local bookstores carry a variety of fiction, non-fiction, children's books and educational books.

    • Souvenirs
There are great souvenir shops on Chaandhanee Magu offering tee shirts, batiks, local crafts and books.

  • Island Resorts

Most resorts include a gift shop. Naturally the prices will be higher than if you purchase similar items from local sellers.

  • Arts and Crafts Markets

There are plenty of opportunities to purchase local artefacts from arts and crafts stalls on the various islands you may visit on excursions. There are all types of crafts on offer, from handwoven mats to wooden boxes and jewellery.

  • Duty Free

Malé Airport features duty free shopping for arriving and departing passengers.
